Chat with PDF

Ask questions and check the cited pages.

Answers your questions about a PDF in a chat beside the document, citing the page and sentence behind each answer.

How to use it

  1. Open Chat with PDF and choose a PDF, drop one in, or try the sample agreement.
  2. At the top, choose API key and connect a key from Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Mistral, Meta or OpenRouter, or choose This device and download a model once.
  3. Ask a question and press Enter. Select a numbered source to see the page it comes from. Ask follow-up questions as you like; New chat starts over.

Output

Answers stream in and end with numbered sources; select one to open its page. You can download the conversation as Markdown, and it is saved in this browser (see Saved chats).

Your API key or this device

Your API keyThis device

Where the text goesYour question and the document’s text (all of it when it fits, otherwise the relevant parts) go from this browser straight to your providerNowhere: the model runs here
CostYour provider bills you directly; superPDF adds nothingFree, after a one-time download (about 2 GB for Gemma 4 E2B)

Connecting a key

Choose a provider, paste your key and select Check key. superPDF lists the provider’s models to confirm the key works (this is free on every provider) and offers its chat models; choose one and select Save and use. Your key is sent only to that provider. It is stored in this browser, encrypted, and kept for this tab only unless you tick Remember the key on this device. Forget key removes it.

Saved chats

Each conversation is saved in this browser with the document it is about. Select Chat history (the clock) to reopen one: its questions, answers and sources come back, and follow-up questions continue from it. Delete one chat or all chats about a document there; removing a document from My documents removes its chats too. Saved chats are encrypted; only which document a chat belongs to, its dates and its number of questions are stored in clear. Up to 50 chats are kept per document.

Finding the answer

With your key, the provider reads the whole document when it fits (about 120,000 characters, roughly 60 pages); otherwise superPDF chooses the sections to send. With a model on this device, superPDF uses the document’s sections, from its bookmarks or else its headings: the model picks the sections that should contain the answer and reads those pages, and if they don’t answer it, superPDF searches every passage for the words in your question instead.

Sources and checks

Every page an answer cites is checked against the words on that page. A citation that doesn’t match is moved to the page that has the text, or removed. A sentence that cites a page the model was never given, and doesn’t clearly match a page it was given, is removed. Select How this answer was checked under an answer to see what changed.

Limits

superPDF sets no file size or page limit. AI can be wrong: check important details on the cited pages. Small on-device models can misread tables and miss details. Questions that need counting across a long document (“how many times is X mentioned”) don’t work well. Text in a PDF that tries to instruct an AI (for example “ignore previous instructions”) is removed before the model reads it. Scanned pages are recognized first, which takes longer.

Scanned pages

Scanned pages, including copier scans whose text layer is weak or garbled, are read with the quick reader first (the AI tools run OCR PDF for you), so you get a result straight away. On computers that can run it, superPDF then offers high-accuracy reading beside the result, and improves those pages in the background: in Chat and Ask multiple PDFs the pages behind your latest question come first and new questions use the improved text; elsewhere, Run again with the improved text redoes the result. It runs on this device: nothing leaves it, and it works offline once downloaded. Download: 871 MB, once, only when you choose it; delete it any time in On-device AI models. Speed: about 10 to 30 seconds a page on a recent computer (the offer shows the time for your pages); up to 20 pages are read at a time unless you choose more or pick pages. It reads English and other European languages best; check results in other scripts, and like any OCR it can misread faded or handwritten text. Running page headers, footers and page numbers are left out of the text. If anything goes wrong, the quick result stays, with a short note. See High-accuracy reading.

Privacy

Runs in your browser, with the AI you choose. With a model on this device, nothing leaves it. With your own API key (BYOK), the document text the tool needs goes from your browser straight to your provider, never through superPDF. See Privacy: AI features.
