Redact PDF

Remove sensitive content and metadata.

Permanently removes the text, images and drawings under the boxes you draw, instead of hiding them under a black shape.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF, decide whether to remove the document metadata, and select Redact pages.
  2. Draw a box over everything you want removed. Switch pages with the arrows above the page.
  3. Select Redact. superPDF checks the result and only offers it if no text or comments remain on the redacted pages, and the words you covered don’t appear in bookmarks, form fields or attachments.
  4. Download the result and check it before you share it.

Output

A new PDF in which each page you drew on is an image of the page at about 200 dpi, with the boxes painted solid black. superPDF checks the result before it offers the download.

What changes

  • Redacted pages become images. They lose selectable text, links, form fields and comments, and the file gets bigger. Run OCR PDF afterwards if you need those pages searchable again.
  • Pages without boxes keep their text and everything else.
  • Bookmarks and named destinations that go to a redacted page are removed. A bookmark under a removed one moves up to its place if it goes to a page you kept.
  • Form fields with a box on a redacted page are removed completely, including their boxes on other pages, because every copy shows the same value.
  • Bookmarks and form fields elsewhere that repeat the words you covered are removed too.
  • Attachments are always removed, because their contents can’t be checked.
  • Accessibility tags are removed, because they would no longer match the redacted pages.
  • With metadata removal on, the title, author, subject, keywords and other hidden properties are cleared.

The text on pages you didn’t redact is kept, even where it repeats what you covered. Check those pages for anything sensitive.
