How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF. Pick check only to get a report, or check and fix.
  2. Select Check and fix. The problems found are listed.
  3. Confirm the title and language, and describe each image in a sentence, or mark it as decorative.
  4. Select Apply fixes, read what was fixed and what wasn’t, and download the PDF and the report.

Output

With check and fix: the fixed PDF and a text report of what was fixed and what still needs work. With check only: the report alone.

What is checked

  • Document title, and whether the title bar shows it instead of the file name.
  • Document language.
  • Tags (the structure screen readers use) and the tagged-PDF marker.
  • Alternative text for images.
  • Scanned pages with no text. Run OCR PDF first, then check again.
  • Tab order for pages with links or form fields, and form fields without a description.

How tags are added

For untagged documents, superPDF groups the text on each page into paragraphs by position and size, and marks larger or short bold paragraphs as headings. Pictures become figures with your descriptions, and lines, boxes and backgrounds are marked as decoration. Reading order follows the order the file draws its text, which is usually right for single-column documents. Lists and tables are tagged as paragraphs. Documents that already have tags keep them, and you can still add missing image descriptions. Pages that draw text inside grouped content aren’t tagged; the report says so.

Automated checks can’t tell whether headings, reading order or descriptions are right, and the result isn’t certified as PDF/UA. Test important documents with a screen reader.
